HKAB launches "Little Volunteers, Big Hearts" Volunteering Programme

to actively promote diversity and foster harmony in society

To promote the joint-industry efforts in contributing to society, the Hong Kong Association of Banks ("HKAB") launches its key volunteering initiative in 2014, "Little Volunteers, Big Hearts", as part of its ongoing commitment to fulfil its motto "Banks and the Community, We Care We Share". This programme invites the secondary and primary school students to participate in a number of volunteering seminars and visits organised by the member banks, allowing students to better understand the fabrics of society and convey the message of caring through generations.

Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, GBS, JP, Chief Secretary for Administration of HKSAR; Mr He Guangbei, Chairman of HKAB, as well as Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of Bank of China (Hong Kong); and the Committee Members of HKAB jointly officiated at the Opening Ceremony of the "Little Volunteers, Big Hearts" today. In full support of the initiative, they also visited the booths set up by various social enterprises to learn more about the production of gift bags for grassroot families as well as the language and food culture of the minorities, helping to foster harmony in society.

Mr He Guangbei, Chairman of HKAB, said, "HKAB encourages its member banks to undertake more social responsibility works. The Chinese character of 'volunteering ()' is a vivid reflection of our role to lend a helping hand. It is composed of the character of "myself ()", encouraging both individuals and corporations to put 'volunteering' into action. We hope that members of the community will commit their efforts to helping those in need, to share love and build a harmonious society."

Through the "Little Volunteers, Big Hearts" Programme from June to November this year, the staff of the member banks will lead the secondary and primary school students to visit the grassroots families and give out gift bags. The little volunteers will show their caring and better understand the grassroots families. In addition, some cultural exchanges with the minorities on their habits and food culture will also be conducted to promote diversity in the community.

Apart from the "Little Volunteers, Big Hearts" Programme, HKAB will continue to organise a series of educational seminars and workshops for different target groups. These include:

  • Junior 'Banker' Induction – Under this programme, secondary school students will visit different departments in banks and take part in other interactive activities. By giving them a glimpse of life as a banker, the programme widens their horizons and gives them a broader career perspective.
  • Financial Education Workshop – The HKAB has collaborated with the Hong Kong Council of Social Service on a series of financial education programmes for low-income and single-parent families, supported by volunteers from member banks. Over 25 of these financial management workshops have been held, attracting over 700 participants in total.
  • ATM Education Programme - To help senior citizens learn to use simplified ATMs, member banks have provided volunteers to conduct ATM Education Talks at senior centres in various districts around Hong Kong. To date, the HKAB has organised over 60 of these educational talks, attended by over 1,000 senior citizens.
